Autumn Colours

I love the Autumn - probably my favourite time of year. Love the colours of the leaves, conkers, and berries and the smell of the bonfires starting. The Ladies pond is a bit cold though now and the boots and mittens are on for the winter which is sad but essential for me. It still gives the greatest joy though whatever the weather.

Lots of news from Hettie Holland - firstly we have been nominated for a Time Out Love London Award so please vote for us by clicking here!

Also the artist Barnaby Barford has created his version of, 'The Tower of Babel' to be seen currently in the V and A. It is a huge tower made up of little china shops which he has taken from the streets of London....and guess what Hettie Holland features as one of the shops. Take a look here.

AND It's our 2nd Birthday next week just in time for Halloween, so we're having a little party:

Friday 30th 6.30pm -9.30pm

10% off all purchases for the night and lots of little treats for you too.

The Christmas stock is rolling in now too so there will always be something new for you each time you visit. Here's a sneak preview....Swedish bath salts, whiskey stones, pineapple money boxes, pretty room sprays, embroidered baby grows, new jewellery oh and more coyote skulls are coming in from Canada!

Happy Birthday to HETTIE HOLLAND and enjoy the Autumn

Summer is here...

Last weekend’s pop up concerts for Stroud Green Music Festival at Deli at 80 and here in Hettie Holland were a huge success. Audience crammed into the store to hear Claire Norburn and Arianne Prussner sing a selection of medieval songs and then later in the day our very own Fender Rhodes was fabulously played by Nick Lacey accompanying Winnie Greer singing some great jazz ballads. Peter Desmond’s addition of some fine trumpet solos wonderfully blasted us too and it was a great preview for the night’s full concert in the Church Hall, which was packed out later. Here’s a clip of Winnie singing in store.

When I opened HH 18 months ago, I had no idea that I would meet so many interesting people, but this weekend I met a ex New Yorker off to Japan on a work trip to bring back Japanese art for a gallery, along with an ex Stroud Greener who wants me to open a Hettie Holland in Bounds Green where she has moved to, a regular to HH a wonderful actress with whom I discuss the plays she has recently seen, and a newcomer who is a talented sports physio whose brother it turns out is working with one of my best friends on a festival in Salzburg. HH seems to be a magnet for wonderful creatives and I am really enjoying listening to all the chatter but especially the special stories behind the gifts being bought.  I am thinking of trying to capture some of these stories as little vox pop’s to add to the website.

I am planning a weekend away trip to one of my favourite places – Mayfield Studio in Painswick, a beautiful Cotswold Village nr Stroud, Gloucestershire. This fabulous retreat apartment which was originally an 18thCentury outbuilding is run by one of my best buddies who is not only a great garden and interiors designer but also pretty good at sourcing furniture for me too.  It’s beautifully styled with 5 star rating on airbnb and you can even take your dog which suits me. Take a look at

There are fantastic walks from the village including the Cotswold Way, nearby towns are Stroud, Gloucester and Cheltenham all offering places to eat, farmer's markets, many Arts festivals and racing at Cheltenham. Bristol and Bath are a 45 minute drive away.

Many guests us the Studio as a bolt-hole and quiet place to work or study as well as a delightful place to stay whilst exploring the fabulous Cotswold countryside that is on the doorstep.

Please add to your diary my Summer evening party for late night shopping with a bit of help from The Deli at 80 too….FRIDAY 17th JULY 6 – 10pm and I might try and get a bit of live music going too on the Fender Rhodes..

Happy pond swimming the temperature now is just perfect.

Stroud Green on the Map

So Stroud Green Festival is almost here when Holy Trinity Church will be taken over by virtuoso singers and musicians to give to us a celebration of live music. This year not only do we have the internationally renowned soprano Emma Kirkby performing, but pop up performances are taking place in various venues during the two week festival at Stapleton Tavern, Deli At 80 and the Library.  Lucky for me Winnie Greer and jazz friends will be doing a little warm up performance RIGHT HERE at Hettie Holland on Sat 20th at 4pm. Prepare to be blasted by vocal, trumpet, drums , and bass accompanied by the Fender Rhodes Piano having its first performance! I can't wait and will also be sure to go to the performance in the evening.

SUNDAY 21st in Father's Day so don't be caught out this year. We have plenty of gift ideas from tiny men's soaps from Germany in cool mid century packaging to shave kits, beard kits and stainless steel hip flasks with just enough room for a few sips of something special. Make a fuss of your Dad this year. The Father's Day gifts are all on the website too so we can send them out directly if you like.

We took stock this week of fab T shirts from husband and wife designers Supermaggie based in Austin, Texas USA. They are hand printed, one size and come in 5 great designs. Come and see them all in store. The light sweatshirts come in a variety of colours too and are so useful for summer evenings here when you need another light layer.

On a personal note our lovely dear little schnauzer has to have an op on Monday. He will be convalescing for over a week and back to wearing the dreaded cone of shame! So if you see us on parkland Walk he's not a dangerous little chap - just has a sore foot! Hopefully he will be back to running the Heath with me before too long as he has been missed.

Busy with Art

The Fine Art Degree Show week for Central St Martin's has had our household in a spin! The Private View was terrific but packed with people so we have been round a second time during the day when it's easier to see and digest. So interesting to see these talented students work and thinking about where they might be heading now. Impressive stuff all round so I am tempted to visit the graphics, illustration, fashion and jewellery shows in the coming weeks.

To complement your creative minds I am keeping a stock of wonderful art books from my favourite publishing house Thames and Hudson. Great for gifts, to dress the coffee table, or to just inspire. They will be added to the website soon but for now come and see in store.

I have just unpacked a new stock of the classic Moleskine notebooks. Two types of paper plain or lined for writing or sketching and the three most popular sizes, and I have kept to black as why would you need a colour? They are probably one of the best, most understated gifts, suiting just about everyone.

Don't forget to pencil the Stroud Green Festival dates 18 -28th June into your diaries. Plenty of great classical and early music, poetry and jazz to listen to. We have two pop up concerts here in the store on 20th June and I am really excited as Winnie Greer and Jazz friends Peter Desmond and Nick Lacey will be popping in to christen the Fender Rhodes Piano. So if you want to hear that be in Hettie Holland at 4pm!

I will be sending out more info as we get nearer the date. This weekend its the 84th birthday for my dear Dad  - big jazz lover and I've asked Alison @thefoodclinic to make me a suitable show stopping cake. Photos will definitely be posted as it is sure to be magnificent!

Becoming a Foodie

I am becoming obsessed with healthy eating and in between juicing my kale I am reading all matter of literature on the subject. Favourite blog @thefoodclinic from nutritionist friend Alison who runs fab workshops, cookery clinics, talks, catering and is a super foodie role model. Useful having someone on hand to give you tips on making quinoa taste interesting! Alison can cater for your special event too and I have asked her to make a birthday cake for my dad's 83rd birthday coming up. Do check out her website

We are swiftly moving into wedding season here - so I am thrilled that I have coerced designer to design a new contemporary wedding card and it's arriving very soon. There are plenty of wedding gift ideas here, huge choice from  a rustic pair of love birds,  contemporary concrete vases, coloured glass vases, tattooed cushions, city prints,  and prints.  I can wrap your special wedding gift too so you are all set to go!

Don't forget that you can get birthday, anniversary, wedding and engagement gifts and cards here as well as a few groovy bits for you or your home. A lovely little girl came into store this morning with her mum a Crouch Ender and the daughter said to her mum, "This is just the best shop ever!" I think I have to agree with her.

I’m getting that spring cleaning feeling now! It makes me want to re-paint my lounge, cheer up the sofa and refresh what I call home. I think it’s down to the Sun streaming through the windows that makes you want to open them up to the world and shake off the winter. With that in mind, it makes me really happy to introduce you to a few new things that have arrived in Hettie Holland. I hope they serve to cheer up a room that is in need of a little shake up - especially if you’re not about to launch into a major re-decoration.

So how about these Copper Planters which you can use just as decor or put a bushy indoor plant inside - the green and copper colours look lovely together. Also in new are House Doctor Glass Vases which will take a big bunch of Spring tulips or ranunculus and make any room literally come to life! Quirky new stock too with gold parrot candles, boho style trinket trays, and tattooist designed cushions. It’s always worth popping in as the stock frequently changes and there is always something new to see.

Wedding season is almost upon us too so I’ve stocked up with present ideas - plenty of different styles of wooden and brass candle sticks, concrete dipped vases in various colours and the famous Eames placemats and coasters. You can order online at the e-store and collect in the store or have it send out -  gift wrapped and ready to go - whatever is easiest for you.

Planning is ongoing for this year’s Stroud Green Festival which I am again sponsoring and Clare who runs it has come up with novel idea of having some pop up performances in various shops, bars and pubs. Finally I get a musician to play the Fender Rhodes electric piano in store! Hettie Holland and a few others will be having music on Sat 20th June so I’ll let you know who and time soon. I think this is a great idea as it’s magical to suddenly hear live virtuoso playing whilst having a coffee or doing some shopping. Be sure to stop, enjoy the music and be inspired to book tickets to see some great performances.

Crouch End 10km this weekend so if you are running make sure you get filled up with your porridge before you leave and have a great run for a good cause. Wish me luck!

Welcome to Spring 2015. It feels like a long time coming. But now its arrived, I am ready to get back to the Women’s Pond on Hampstead Heath. It is still cold, but the rush it creates is like nothing else. Along side this, I have decided to get my bike back out and have already managed a cycle up the canal towpath to Limehouse Basin (from Finsbury Park and back about 26km - amazing). This weekend we are heading North on the towpath as far as we can. 2015 for me is the year of swimming, cycling and running – I can almost see a triathlon in the distance!

The big news with Hettie Holland is the new website is LIVE. We have personally photographed my finds to give it the Hettie Holland touch. The Kirsteen Stewart scarves look beautiful along with the Concrete Vases from House Doctor and our very own suede make-up pouches. To make life easier for my locals, you can now buy online and collect in store – really useful when needing a last minute present! We will be adding new items continually so keep your eye my newsletter for updates.

For Spring 2015, I have been searching far and wide for new products for HH’s shelves. This is the best part of running HH, finding unique and interesting items for my community. One such find are the Thames and Hudson book collection. They flew off the shelves at Christmas, so I have expanded the range for spring – they should arrive any day now. As for new products, coming soon Temerity Jones’s new line of quirky and unique homeware – for example fun gold parrot candles, gold pineapple trinket boxes, and cool copper plant pots for indoor plants and already here for Spring are the hand blown glass vases from House Doctor ready for bunches of colourful tulips. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Welcome to 2015

Thoughts of a healthy and peaceful 2015 now override everything else after such a harrowing week for the people of France. We will all no doubt face challenges and obstacles in the year ahead, so I go into 2015 wanting more than anything to have the strength of character and health to help me get through any dark days. This year my plans include the new e commerce site being up and running in February. The site is in construction and we are currently taking photos of stock so you will be able to purchase direct and have goods sent out to you. This is a major task – who would have thought how difficult it was to take a photo of a glass jar! We also have a stack of wonderful ercol furniture that needs to be upholstered before it can be in the shop, so January is about looking at fabrics and colour schemes. Will keep you posted on its arrival and I will be glad to see it move on because it is taking up a lot of room in the house! I am going to order some more Supermaggie sweatshirts for the spring because everyone seems to really like them and they bring a bit of cheer to the winter wardrobe, especially when you want to feel slouchy at home and am off to Top Drawer trade show next week to find the best of everything! So welcome 2015. We are happy to be here.

Halloween Horra

After a harrowing Halloween trip to Ireland where I suffered from salmonella poisoning (don’t ask)  and haunted house trauma ,it’s relief to be back in the store and get unpacking and sorting through all the new stock for Christmas. The Halloween milestone for us in store really is the starting line for the Christmas run and time to reflect on what we ordered and hope we got it right. New to the shelves this week are the hand embroidered hankies made by a women’s group in Bulgaria which come in their own little box with lid, and also a massive order from Savon de Marseilles who produce the gorgeous patchouli and black jasmine soaps, hand balms, candles, diffusers and room sprays. This brand sold out before Christmas last year so I have stocked up so there’s plenty to go round. Looking at the dates for my special Christmas friend’s night and am going for Thursday 4th December so put it in your diary now.

Jewellery to Cherish

One the exciting things about owning a store, is that I get to go out and buy things that I really love and want myself! So am typing this wearing a stunning painted porcelain ring in the shape of a foxes head, from a company in Scotland called ‘And Mary’. Saw their jewellery at a London trade show and fell in love with all these porcelain creatures, some dressed in clothes, others in action like a running fox necklace. They even make animal head cufflinks! Just love this beautifully packaged treat.
